In Shocking Twist ‘American Idol’ Puts Country Singers Grace Leer vs. Lauren Mascitti Up For A Public VOTE [VIDEO]

American Idol Season 18 continued on Sunday, and we’re ready to vote! We saw the rest of the Top 40 perform in Hawaii for the Final Judgment. Half the artists had to be cut to make up the Top 20, and the singers pulled out all the stops for some amazing performances.


However, this round wasn’t without its surprises. The judges revealed a major twist when talking to the final two contestants of the night. You can already vote for the final contestant in the Top 20 right here. Read on to watch the night’s performances, and find out who made it through.

Dillon James

The show left us in suspense last week after Dillon performed “The Times They Are A Changin'” by Bob Dylan. Lionel Richie called Dillon “an artist” and announced that he’s moving on to the Top 20. Dillon was emotional after the judging, saying he’s “excited.”

Genavieve Linkowski

This singer, who lost her sister last year, chose to sing “You Say” by Lauren Daigle, saying the song connected with her. During judging, Luke Bryan said it was the first time he didn’t feel a “connection” during Genavieve’s performance. Unfortunately, Genavieve didn’t make it into the Top 20.

Franklin Boone

This music teacher performed “Daughters” by John Mayer, in honor of his own daughter. Franklin said he was “jittery” during judging, but he had nothing to worry about. He made it through to the Top 20, with Katy Perry saying it was on “a whole ‘nother level.”

Julia Gargano

This singer performed “Glitter in the Air’ by P!nk. She said she was “proud” of her performance. Luke said it was good to see Julia stepping away from her piano, and said the judges think she can go a long way in the competition, calling her a “frontrunner.” Julia is going to the Top 20.

Aliana Jester

This singer’s family surprised her in Hawaii before her performance. She sang “This Is Me” from The Greatest Showman. The judges were impressed by her performance, and sent Aliana to the Top 20.

Sophia Wackerman

Sophia spent time in Hawaii with her brother James, who has an intellectual disability called Fragile X syndrome. During the showcase, she performed “Levels” by Nick Jonas. Katy was impressed by the performance, but said Luke and Lionel didn’t agree with her. However, they still sent Sophia to the Top 20.

Robert Taylor

This singer, who lost his father last year, performed an energetic rendition of “Take Me to the Pilot” by Elton John. During the performance, Katy suggested that it was “too much.” Luke said it was “all over the map,” and he needed to control it more. Robert will not be going to the Top 20. After the judging, Robert ran from the cameras and was chased by Bobby Bones, who gave him advice about moving forward.

Kimmy Gabriela

This singer is bonding with her musician dad throughout her American Idol journey. She performed “You Don’t Do It For Me Anymore” by Demi Lovato. Afterward, Kimmy said she didn’t think she lived up to the judges’ standards. Katy told her, “It’s not enough just to be a good singer.” However, Kimmy is still going to the Top 20.

Shannon Gibbons

This singer performed Adele’s “Send My Love (To Your New Lover)” during the Hawaii showcase. Katy complimented the “grit” in Shannon’s voice, and said they see her “potential.” However, Shannon won’t be going to the Top 20.

Olivia Ximines

This young singer performed “Proud Mary” by Tina Turner with her own choreography. She even removed her coat to reveal a yellow fringed dress. Lionel praised her energy and movement, and told her she’s moving on to the Top 20.

Arthur Gunn

The judges said this singer had an “instant identity” when he auditioned. In Hawaii, he performed Bob Marley’s “Is This Love” on the guitar. Katy encouraged him to continue connecting with the audience. Lionel called him “pure light,” and said it was the “easiest decision” they made to send him to the Top 20.

Demi Rae

This singer, who has struggled with confidence, performed “Lonely” by Noah Cyrus. Unfortunately, Demi won’t be moving on to the Top 20, although the judges said they’re “proud” of her. “It’s not my time right now,” Demi acknowledged. “Life goes on, and I’ll go on.”

Grace Leer & Lauren Mascitti

These singers were the last two contestants to be judged. Grace performed “(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman” by Carole King. Lauren performed “Two More Bottles of Wine” by Emmylou Harris. The judges talked to both Grace and Lauren together.

Luke said there was only one spot left, and complimented both of their performances. The judges said they “couldn’t make a decision,” so they chose to have America vote on which of them should make it to the Top 20.
