Singer Ed Sheeran has officially won the plagiarism case over his song “Thinking Out Loud.” A New York jury found that Sheeran did not copy Marvin Gaye’s “Let’s Get It On” when writing the 2014 hit.

Ed Sheeran Wins Marvin Gaye Plagiarism Lawsuit

The family of Marvin Gaye’s co-writer Ed Townsend had accused Sheeran of plagiarizing the 1973 song “Let’s Get It On” when writing his Grammy-winning release “Thinking Out Loud.” Sheeran was being sued for $100 million over the accusation.

Sheeran appeared in court to deny the accusations, playing parts of his song and talking about his songwriting process. He also told his lawyer at one point that he would be “done” with music if he lost the case.

On Thursday, the verdict was in that Sheeran had won the case. According to the BBC, the jury found that Sheeran “independently” created his song “Thinking Out Loud.” Sheeran reportedly stood up and hugged his team after hearing the verdict.

It’s a Busy Week for the Singer

This is a big week for Sheeran. In addition to the lawsuit, his Disney+ docuseries Ed Sheeran: The Sum of It All was released on Wednesday, and his new album Subtract is being released on Friday. He’s also kicking off his latest tour in Dallas on Saturday.

Sadly, Sheeran had to miss his grandmother’s funeral in Ireland on Wednesday amid his busy schedule.

“I’ve got the documentary coming out tomorrow, I’ve got the album coming out on Friday, I start my tour on Saturday, my grandmother’s funeral’s tomorrow, I’m still in this court case,” Sheeran told Gayle King on Tuesday at the premiere of his docuseries.

On Sunday, Sheeran will be appearing as a guest judge on American Idol. He and Alanis Morissette will take over for Katy Perry and Lionel Richie, who will be in the UK performing at King Charles’ coronation concert.
