American Idol has shared an early release audition from this Sunday’s new episode, featuring singer Elijah McCormick. Elijah, who survived a car accident in 2019, already received a Platinum Ticket a few months ago thanks to the show’s fans.

Elijah McCormick Auditions for American Idol

Before his audition, Elijah shared his emotional story of surviving a car accident on the day of his high school graduation. As he explained, he flatlined nine times after the accident and spent 79 days in the hospital undergoing 10 surgeries.

Elijah’s mother had signed him up to audition for American Idol before his accident. Now, in Season 21, the singer finally got to perform for the judges. He auditioned with a cover of “Bless the Broken Road” by Rascal Flatts, showing off a beautiful voice.

The performance brought tears to judge Lionel Richie’s eyes. All three judges gave Elijah a hug after his performance, and Luke Bryan compared him to late Season 19 runner-up Willie Spence. Katy Perry told Elijah that he’s “fulfilling your destiny.”

Fans Gave Elijah a Platinum Ticket

The judges voted to give Elijah a Golden Ticket to Hollywood during his audition. However, the singer is also a recipient of the coveted Platinum Ticket, which allows him to skip the first round of Hollywood Week.

During the American Music Awards in November, fans had a chance to vote for one of three singers to receive the Platinum Ticket. Elijah was up against fellow contestants Matt Wilson and Haven Madison. Based on their audition performances, America chose to give the Platinum Ticket to Elijah.

Elijah posted about his Platinum Ticket win on Instagram, thanking fans for voting and telling them, “I won’t let you guys down.”

The next episode of American Idol Season 21 will air this Sunday night at 8/7c on ABC.
