Kelly Clarkson had a chat with fellow American Idol star Chris Daughtry on her talk show this week. Daughtry then performed his new song “Heavy is the Crown,” giving us the greatest Idol nostalgia.
Daughtry, who placed fourth on Idol Season 5, explained what inspired the song “Heavy Is the Crown,” including how it relates to the unusual times we’re living in right now.
Chris Daughtry Talks to Kelly Clarkson About New Song
Daughtry, who was sporting a huge beard, appeared via video chat to talk to Clarkson about the song. The band released the track last month, with a live performance video debuting last week.
The gritty rock song features loud guitars accompanied by Daughtry’s iconic voice.
“Heavy is the crown / Never pause, never let them bleed you out,” he sings. “Are they still standing when they try to bring the castle down / I’ll never bow down / Heavy is the crown.”

Clarkson asked what the song is about, and Daughtry explained: “We’re all kind of like the stars of our own movie … We’re the kings and queens of our own castle. There’s so much pressure just to live, especially these days.”
“Not only that, but the pressures of carving your own path without conforming to what everyone else thinks is normal,” he continued. “And just the daily choices that we have to make. It’s a lot of pressure sometimes.”
What Has Daughtry Been Up To?
Daughtry is set to release a new album later this year. It will be their first since 2018, when they released Cage to Rattle. The band parted ways with their previous label, RCA Records, in 2019.

“There was also a lot of changeover at the label, so after the second record I didn’t work with the same people again,” Daughtry explained about the decision. “It was all, from record to record, different A&Rs, different people with different opinions and different ideas of what this band was.”
Daughtry says he now has “100 percent control,” and that this will be “hands down, the best record I’ve ever made.”
The band released another single, called “World on Fire,” last August. We can’t wait to hear the whole album.
