Will Carrie Underwood’s Inauguration Performance Negatively Impact ‘American Idol’?
Reading Time: 2 minutes
Carrie Underwood’s controversial performance at President Donald Trump’s inauguration last week could affect American Idol when it returns to ABC for Season 23 in March. Underwood is joining the show as a judge, replacing Katy Perry.
Carrie Underwood’s Inauguration Performance Caused Backlash
Last week, Underwood caused controversy when she appeared at President Trump’s inauguration to sing “America the Beautiful.” Due to a technical issue, the former American Idol winner performed the song a cappella.
In addition to the backlash she received online, the Daily Mail reports that insiders are worried about the effect that Underwood’s apparent support of Trump might have on the new season of American Idol. That includes what it might project about the show’s “values of inclusivity and diversity.”
“Idol contestants come from a wide range of diverse backgrounds, and so do the people who work on the show,” a source told the outlet. “There are concerns that her apparent political stance might make some contestants feel uncomfortable.”
The show is also reportedly concerned that the move could “create some tension” between Underwood and longtime Idol judge Lionel Richie, who has spoken out against Trump in the past.

Underwood Has Not Addressed the Controversy
Underwood has not responded to the backlash she’s received over her inauguration performance. However, she did release a statement beforehand explaining her decision to participate in the event.
“I love our country and am honored to have been asked to sing at the Inauguration and to be a small part of this historic event,” Underwood said. “I am humbled to answer the call at a time when we must all come together in the spirit of unity and looking to the future.”
A few days after the inauguration, Underwood got back to promoting her new Hulu concert special on social media. The comments on her posts are full of people expressing their disappointment in Underwood’s choice to sing for Trump.
Could this backlash extend to the new season of American Idol when it premieres on March 9? Will the show’s ratings be negatively affected by Underwood joining the judging panel? We’ll have to wait and see what happens.
