Why Kelly Clarkson Is Suing Her Ex-Husband Brandon Blackstock

Kelly Clarkson’s legal battle with her ex-husband Brandon Blackstock isn’t over, as the singer reportedly filed a countersuit against his and his father’s management firm this month. Blackstock worked as Clarkson’s manager for many years.
Kelly Clarkson Files New Countersuit Against Ex-Husband
According to E! News, Clarkson has filed a countersuit against Blackstock’s management firm after he and his father Narvel appealed an order to repay Clarkson $2.6 million in commissions.
Last year, a California labor commissioner found that Blackstock should not have booked jobs for Clarkson on projects such as The Voice and the Billboard Music Awards. Usually, only agents can lawfully book those kinds of gigs. Blackstock reportedly received commissions for those bookings, including almost $2 million for The Voice.
In Clarkson’s new complaint, her lawyers argue that when she worked with Starstruck Entertainment between 2007 and 2020, they violated labor laws because they were not licensed as a talent agency. They also argued that “all agreements between the parties should be declared void and unenforceable.”

Clarkson Filed for Divorce in 2020
Clarkson filed for divorce from Blackstock in June 2020, after seven years of marriage. The divorce was finalized in 2022. The ex-couple shares two children together — a daughter named River Rose, and a son named Remington Alexander.
The singer received the couple’s Montana ranch as part of the divorce settlement, and she was ordered to pay Blackstock $1.3 million plus support, including $45,000 per month in child support. Until earlier this year, she also had to pay Blackstock $115,000 per month in spousal support.
Clarkson’s legal battle with Blackstock’s management firm began in September 2020, when Starstruck sued the singer for allegedly owing over $1 million in unpaid commissions. Clarkson then filed a petition with the California Labor Commission.
According to E! News, Blackstock has not responded to Clarkson’s latest lawsuit. A hearing is reportedly scheduled for March 27.
