Tori Kelly Set to Release “The Curly Girl Blues” in Late February
The former American Idol star is ready to break into the world of children’s books. “The Curly Girl Blues” is based off her experience growing up with hair that is different from others around her. Kelly’s natural hair is practically a staple look for her at this point, so it’s interesting to hear that she was insecure about it as a child.
In a recent interview, she talked about having a troublesome relationship with her hair during her childhood. She shared that her curly hair comes in part from her Jamaican and Puerto Rican heritage. The inspiration behind her book came from not seeing many people with hair like hers at school.
“Around school I didn’t really see my hair and I was very insecure about it. I wanted to write a book that could hopefully inspire other kids,” Kelly said. “If I went through this and I didn’t like my hair and was struggling with it there’s gotta be other kids who feel the same way.”
Kelly created this book so children don’t have to struggle with their image the way she did. The talk show host praised the singer for turning her insecurity into empowerment. Fans in the comments of the interview Instagram post are applauding Kelly for creating the book they needed in their youth.
The children’s book follows the main character, Emma, who has a case of the “The Curly Girl Blues.” The reader follows Emma through a journey of exploring her individuality. Throughout the journey Emma learns to celebrate the characteristics that make her unique. “The Curly Girl Blues” is now available for pre-order. The children’s book officially releases on Monday, Feb 28.
