It may have only been a movie, but it seems like the events in Contagion are shockingly similar to what is currently going on around the globe with the rapid spread of coronavirus. Steven Soderbergh’s 2011 film depicts the spread of a virus that stumps doctors and researchers when it comes time to identify it and treat it. Sound familiar?
While the virus in the movie is a little bit more severe and horrifying than coronavirus, it does put into perspective just how much disease can affect an entire population of people if not treated with the right precautionary measures.
People Compare Contagion And Coronavirus On Twitter
It seems like people on Twitter are all in agreement that the plot of Contagion is hitting a little too close to home lately. The virus is now being referred to as a pandemic much like it is in the movie.
Coronavirus And Contagion Both Have Connections To Asia
In the movie, the main character just got back from a trip to Hong Kong before she starts experiencing the symptoms of the virus. She then dies of an unknown cause. This draws a parallel to the overwhelming spread of the coronavirus in Asia and to people that have traveled to Asia.
There have been several travel bans put into place across the world in the attempt to stop its spread. Most recently, travel to 26 European countries from the United States has been banned for 30 days.
The Screenwriter Of ‘Contagion’ Is Not Surprised About The Spread Of Coronavirus
Scott Z. Burns, the screenwriter for ‘Contagion,’ recently spoke out about the movie’s connection to coronavirus. He ultimately said that he is not surprised that something similar is starting to happen in real life with people from all different areas of the universe contracting the same virus.
He also commented upon the fact that there are members of the CDC who were waiting to deal with worldwide problems like this and hopes that they will find a fix to this problem soon. In the movie, a vaccine is ultimately created to stop the spreading of the virus so we can only hope that is another cinematic parallel that we will see soon in real life.
