Season 20 The Voice runner-up Kenzie Wheeler has shown some love for his trademark mullet. The Team Kelly finalist said that the look is “here to stay” during his first televised appearance since appearing on the NBC series. The Florida native sat down with WFLA’s Daytime show on Monday to discuss his signature style. Following the interview, Wheeler performed his new original song “Got Her Goodbye On.”
Kenzie Wheeler Explains the Origin of His Mullet
During the appearance, Wheeler shared that it was actually his dad who encouraged him to rock the Billy Ray Cyrus vibe.
“He had one a long time before me but he kind of puts his in a ponytail a lot,” Wheeler said on Daytime. “Sometimes I do that if I’m in the truck or whatever, if my hair blows around everywhere and all that it gets all tangled up. But a couple of my buddies have mullets too, so that’s kind of where it came from too, them and my dad and I was like ‘what the heck, i’m going to grow one’ and I had it as I went on to The Voice and it kind of went from there. It’s my thing now.”
His signature look has been praised by other fellow Country stars. He even made a pinky promise to Kelsea Ballerini that he would never cut it.
“I love my mullet and I’m glad that I inspired a lot of people to start growing one,” Wheeler told Music Mayhem. “They are for sure making a comeback across the country.”
Wheeler has for sure gained mass attention since appearing on The Voice, but his journey didn’t begin there. He has been singing ever since he was young, and decided to take his talent seriously in high school. After performing karaoke at a local restaurant, he impressed family and friends and began to perform every weekend.
Coming soon, you can catch Wheeler perform at the Dallas Bull on August 27 as part of the Bartow Ford Company concert series.
“I’m super excited to be playing the Dallas Bull,” Wheeler tells Music Mayhem. “It’s something I’ve always dreamed about playing, you know, right here in my hometown in the Tampa Bay area. It’s going to be a killer show.”
Tickets for the show are available now for purchase. Don’t miss your chance to see the growing country sensation live in action.
