A 13-year-old contestant on The Voice Kids UK blew the coaches away with his songwriting ability in 2019. Sam Wilkinson sang about losing his mother to leukemia and showed off an incredible talent.

Sam would go on to win the entire show. Read on to find out more about Sam’s story, and check out his performances in the video below.

Sam Wilkinson Impresses The ‘Voice Kids’ Coaches

Sam auditioned for The Voice Kids with a performance of “Like a Rolling Stone” by Bob Dylan. He kicked the performance off by playing the harmonica, impressing the coaches. Pixie Lott and Danny Jones both turned their chairs for Sam’s audition.

Sam sadly lost his mother to leukemia 15 months before he appeared on the show. He performed a song at her funeral, and his dad told him, “If you can do that, you can do anything. It won’t be any harder than that day.”

When Sam said he wrote his own songs, coach Jessie J asked if he would perform one for them. Danny even offered to let him play his guitar, while he accompanied Sam on the harmonica.

Sam sang an original song called “Everything’s Alright.” It made host Emma Willis tear up as she listened from backstage with Sam’s family. Will.i.am was amazed by how “articulate” Sam was, calling him an “experienced soul.”

Sam Brings Jessie J To Tears With His Performance

Sam continued in the competition on Team Danny, performing songs like “Under Pressure” by Queen & David Bowie, and “Father and Son” by Cat Stevens. Then in the final, he once again performed his original song “Everything’s Alright.”

Sam said it was about his late mother. Danny said he wanted it to be “the best song The Voice Kids has ever seen.” Sam performed while playing the guitar, and the coaches gave him a standing ovation.

“It’s so amazing to see someone so young already putting their talent and really hard things that you’re going through into your music. For you to help yourself heal,” Jessie J told Sam with tears in her eyes. “I can’t explain how proud I feel to sit front-row at that incredible concert.”
