Former Dancing with the Stars pro Sharna Burgess shared on Instagram Thursday that she officially became a United States citizen. Burgess, who was born in Australia, expressed how meaningful this milestone was to her.

‘DWTS’ Pro Sharna Burgess Becomes a U.S. Citizen

Burgess lives in the United States with her partner, actor Brian Austin Green, and their baby son Zane. On Thursday, she officially became a U.S. citizen. Burgess shared the news on Instagram, posting a video of herself reading her oath accompanied by Whitney Houston’s rendition of “The Star-Spangled Banner.”

“I had no idea that this would feel emotional for me,” Burgess wrote in the caption. “This has been my home for nearly 12 years now. My son was born here, my life and love and career.. all here. And yet this last step of becoming a citizen and finally having the same rights as all Americans felt so important.”

She went on to share that she’s lived outside Australia since she was 18, frequently “out of a suitcase and from one country to another.” She added that “America slowly became my permanent home.”

“Eventually I found my tribe here, I bought a home here, I fell in love here, I birthed my son here,” Burgess continued. “Now this final step is the period at the end I never knew I was needing so much. This very long chapter of finding belonging has finally come to a close.”

Burgess Took a Break from the Show This Season

Burgess, who won Season 27 of DWTS with celebrity partner Bobby Bones, didn’t return to the ballroom for the current season on Disney+. She explained that she wanted to spend more time with her son Zane, who was born in June of this year.

“I was not ready to spend at minimum 10 hours a day away from Zane,” Burgess said, explaining that it was a “really hard decision” to step away for the season. She also clarified that she doesn’t intend to leave the show permanently as of right now.

Burgess previously competed on Season 30 of DWTS with her partner Brian Austin Green, whom she began dating in 2020. They reached 13th place.
