Former The Voice coach Shakira has been announced as this year’s recipient of the Video Vanguard Award at the MTV Video Music Awards. She’ll also perform at the event for the first time in 17 years.
Shakira to Receive Video Vanguard Award at VMAs
Over the years, Shakira has won four VMAs. This year, she’s nominated four times — for Artist of the Year, Best Collaboration (for “TQG” with Karol G), and Best Latin (for “TQG” and “Acróstico”). To celebrate her Video Vanguard win, she’ll also be performing at this year’s show.
In a statement, Bruce Gillmer of Paramount called Shakira “a trailblazer for women around the world & one of the first artists to lead the globalization of Latin music.” He added, “Her massive impact across the musical landscape will be long lasting as she continues to create and entertain at the highest level.”
Previous recipients of the Video Vanguard Award include Madonna, Janet Jackson, Britney Spears, Beyoncé, Rihanna, and Jennifer Lopez. Last year’s recipient of the honor was Nicki Minaj.
The 2023 MTV Video Music Awards will be held at the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey, on Tuesday, September 12. Fans can watch the event on MTV or stream it on Paramount+.

The Singer Released Several Singles This Year
Shakira hasn’t put out a studio album since 2017, but that hasn’t stopped her from releasing plenty of new music in recent years. So far this year, the singer has put out four singles. That includes the nominated songs “TQG” and “Acróstico.”
She also released “Bzrp Music Sessions, Vol. 53” with Bizarrap earlier this year. The song made headlines because it seemed to call out Shakira’s ex-partner Gerard Piqué. Then in June, Shakira released “Copa Vacia” with Manuel Turizo.
