Even the most talented and successful artists are not immune to the complexities of life and love. Olivia Rodrigo has candidly revealed in a recent interview with The New York Times that her whirlwind journey following the monumental success of her debut album Sour led her to make romantic choices that, in hindsight, she believes she “shouldn’t have” made.

Olivia Rodrigo Opens Up About The Influence of Dating In Her Album

Rodrigo burst onto the music scene with her hit single “Drivers License,” which catapulted her into superstardom. Her debut album, Sour, was a critical and commercial success, earning her numerous awards and accolades, including a Grammy. However, with this newfound fame came immense pressure and expectations.

While Rodrigo acknowledges that she might have made some choices she regrets, she also emphasizes that these experiences were valuable learning opportunities. She admitted to having dated people she now believes she “shouldn’t have.” Despite the challenges and pitfalls, these relationships have inspired her upcoming album GUTS.

GUTS, which is set to be released on September 8, 2023, marks Rodrigo’s return to the music scene. The album is highly anticipated as it promises to showcase her growth as an artist and her ability to convey raw emotions through her music.

The lead single from GUTS, titled “Vampire,” was released in June and has already garnered significant attention. In the song, Rodrigo reflects on an ex who took advantage of her and exploited her celebrity. The decision to write about her fame and vulnerability wasn’t an easy one for Rodrigo, who was initially concerned it might come across as “self-indulgent.” However, she chose to embrace the vulnerability in her songwriting. Seeing it as a way to distill complex emotions into their simplest and purest form.

Rodrigo Addressed The Controversy of ‘Vampire’

One of the controversial elements in “Vampire” is the line that mentions a “fame f*cker.” Rodrigo explained that the song is not solely about fame but rather about someone being manipulative and exploiting others. She believes this theme is universal and that fame is more accessible today than ever before.

While “Vampire” explores the darker side of fame, it’s essential to note that the song is not about her former boyfriend, Adam Faze. The Grammy-winning artist dated the film and TV producer for seven months in 2021 and early 2022. Despite their relationship coming to an end, it appears that Rodrigo’s music is not focused on personal vendettas but rather on broader experiences and emotions.

Apart from Faze, Rodrigo was also linked to DJ and record label founder Zack Bia in June 2022. However, their romance was short-lived, with reports of a breakup surfacing by August 2022.
