Peaceful Protests For George Floyd Turned Into A Fiery Rage

When the video of the police officer with his knee placed right on Floyd’s neck for eight minutes surfaced on the internet, it sent shockwaves to the black community who have been dealing with the unlawful killing of black man Ahmaud Arbery. You can literally hear Floyd in the video saying “Please, I can’t breathe.” Floyd’s family called for the arrests of all of the officers involved in his death. They encouraged peaceful protests. However, his brother spoke to CNN saying “I can’t stop people right now because they have pain. They have the same pain that I feel. I want everything to be peaceful but I can’t make everybody be peaceful. It’s hard.”

Floyd himself was an activist that was fighting for change and peace for the black community. Now, people are left wondering why such a brutally violent act had to take place in order for the state of Minnesota to recognize that the issue of racism is very present in their community. People are tired of seeing black men dying. The protests are an attempt to show that justice needs to be served. Especially in this case after each of the members of the police precinct involved in the murder were not immediately fired.

Fires And Rioting Filled The Streets Of Minneapolis

It was a harrowing scene as the anger and the sadness about losing another black man led to rage and fires sweeping the streets. Social media users documented the progression of the fires and the police trying to get a handle on these crowds of protesters. Videos show protesters spray painting the walls of a Wendy’s along with flames from a nearby Auto Zone that had been set ablaze.

One Twitter user later posted photos of the Wendy’s after the fires were put out and it is completely destroyed. You can clearly make out the words “F*ck MPD” spray-painted on the side. It is now a pile of rubble that is a consequence of this racialized killing.

People Began Looting Local Stores Out Of Anger For George Floyd’s Murder

One Twitter user posted a video from inside of a Target store where you can visibly see people running in to grab items. There are items all over the floor including broken glass. You can also clearly see a white woman grabbing two lamps before making her way out of the store. The tweet says “Just a reminder that only black people are gonna get blamed for all this sh*t while other races were involved.” It is clear from the people that were sharing live updates on social media, taking photos and videos that there were white people and those of other races participating in these protests and looting. It calls for attention to a larger issue that black people will be blamed in the face of adversity.

Systemic racism is very clearly present in this particular community. However, the community involves people of all races and they were all a part of these protests. It is important for people to see that and not assume that black people are responsible for everything that has gone on. Everyone is angry after this murder.

Other photos showed looters taking several items from Target while police tried to stop the protesters from outside. They shot rubber bullets along with tear gas and stun grenades at protesters. The protesters built barricades to protect themselves out of things like shopping carts and shelves from the nearby stores.

The four officers involved in Floyd’s death have finally been fired, and protesters gathered around Chauvin’s home. They wrote the word “murderer” in his driveway. A federal investigation is underway to determine if any of the officers will face any charges.

Chauvin has been involved with three other use-of-force incidents and has been investigated before. This outraged people even more. They feel he is clearly a menace to the black community. The incident further amplifies the need for justice and change to be made starting with the Minneapolis Police Department.
