MerseyGirls Still Dancing After Life Changing Golden Buzzer on ‘BGT’
Reading Time: 2 minutes
First appearing on Season 11 of Britain’s Got Talent, Just Us who later took the name MerseyGirls, showed us the power of friendship. Five teenage dancers came together to try and fulfill one last chance at a dream as an upcoming surgical procedure threatened one girl’s aspirations of competing. Has their dream ended or was that only the beginning?
Just Five Friends Living A Dream
The MerseyGirls met and began dancing together when they were just five-years-old. The girls formed Just Us to help lead dancer Julia Carlile, fulfill her BGT dreams. The teen shared that she was born with scoliosis, and that an upcoming surgery to address it could leave her unable to dance.
The group backed this moving story with an equally moving performance. The group delivered a well-rehearsed routine to Rachel Platten’s “Fight Song,” delivered with beautifully expressive movements. The judges were so moved by the routine and the group’s story, judge David Walliams said it was “a beautiful story about friendship and a stunning performance.” Alesha Dixon was so touched she gave them the Golden Buzzer that helped fulfill a dream.
Life After Touching So Many Hearts
After receiving the Golden Buzzer, the MerseyGirls continued to the finals where they finished in fourth place. After the show, Julia underwent her surgery. One that Simon Cowell paid for. Simon’s gift opened the door for a different procedure option. The new option had less recovery time and a better chance for her to continue dancing.
The procedure was successful and the group was back performing within a few months. Julia shared the details of her journey on “This Morning” just before her first performance back.
After two years, the girls reunited with Cowell for the first time since the surgery, returning to compete in BGT: The Champions. Now with a few new members, the MerseyGirls returned with what Amanda Holden said was “one of the most emotional performances we’ve ever had on the show.”
The group advanced to the grand finale, but didn’t get enough votes to win the title. They certainly did win millions of hearts and their story continues to inspire.
