Mel C, aka Sporty Spice, recently opened up about how her international fame as part of the Spice Girls negatively impacted her. The singer and The Voice Kids coach got candid about her struggles with depression and disordered eating.
Mel C Opens Up About Spice Girls Fame
Mel C has a new memoir coming out called Who I Am in the UK and The Sporty One in the United States, available September 27. The former Spice Girl recently opened up to The Daily Mail about some of the experiences she documents in the book.
“I never want to look back on that time negatively, but it is important for me to tell the difficult parts of my past,” she explained. “Our culture has changed so much and so many young people are hungry for fame. And I just want them to be prepared. It’s not plain sailing.”
Mel C shared a memory from the group’s early days, when manager Chic Murphy commented on her thighs. She recalled that she “was quite unwell for a few years” as she struggled with disordered eating, first by eliminating food groups and later by binge eating.
The singer blamed her problems on “the level of fame” she experienced, adding that she was “embarrassed and ashamed.” She eventually sought help for her issues and was diagnosed with clinical depression, anorexia, and a binge eating disorder, as well as severe anxiety and agoraphobia.

The Spice Girls Are Still Friends Years Later
Mel C also revealed that she and the other four members of the Spice Girls are still friendly years later. She was even recently a guest at the wedding of Victoria Beckham’s (aka Posh Spice) son Brooklyn Beckham.
“We five know that individually we would not have achieved what we did together and we are so grateful to each other for that,” she said. “Yes, we can get childish when we are together and, of course, we still drive each other nuts. There are still times when there’s a big blow up, but it soon blows over.”
She added, “It might sound cheesy, but we are not just colleagues, we are not just friends, we are family.”
Since her time in the group, Mel C has released six solo studio albums. Last year, she competed on Season 30 of Dancing with the Stars, partnered with Gleb Savchenko. They finished in eleventh place.
