Dancing with the Stars pro Mark Ballas has been appearing in Chicago on Broadway as Billy Flynn, alongside his Season 34 dance partner Whitney Leavitt as Roxie Hart. Unfortunately, Ballas recently had to stop performing mid-show due to illness.
Mark Ballas Stops Mid-Show in Chicago
According to Entertainment Now, Ballas had to stop performing in Chicago during the first act of Monday night’s show, explaining in a message to fans that his “voice totally went out on me half way through the first song.”
“I apologize profusely to all that came out to see me & this wonderful cast. I am devastated,” Ballas wrote. The dancer has had to miss other recent performances in the show, writing that an “illness has hit me and my whole household very hard.”
Ballas referred to “aggressive DMs” he had received from fans about him missing performances, writing, “It’s not like I’m doing this on purpose or can prevent what is happening.”
As Ballas previously wrote, “I am trying to rest to be able to get back on my feet as soon as possible… I apologize to all those who were coming to see me tonight, but this is unfortunately out of my hands.”

Ballas Gives Fans an Update
On Tuesday, Mark Ballas took to Instagram stories to give an update on his participation in Chicago. He thanked fans for their patience and support, writing that “no one is more disappointed than I am.”
“I won’t be back in the show tonight,” he wrote. “I came back a bit prematurely, and after listening to my doctors, it’s clear I need to take a little more time to recover properly.”
Ballas thanked actor James T. Lane “for stepping in and holding it down” in the role of Billy Flynn. He finished his post by writing, “I can’t wait to be back with you all very soon.”
