Former American Idol judge Mariah Carey recently collaborated with rapper Latto on a remix of Latto’s song “Big Energy.” The new track, which includes snippets from Carey’s song “Fantasy,” also features DJ Khaled.
Mariah Carey Joins Latto’s ‘Big Energy’ Remix
Latto released “Big Energy” in September 2021. The song sampled the 1981 track “Genius of Love” by Tom Tom Club, which also happens to be sampled in Carey’s 1995 song “Fantasy.” So Carey was the perfect choice to be featured on the remix.
The track opens with an iconic high note from Carey. Soon, she offers some lyrics from “Fantasy,” interspersed with Latto’s rapping. The song begins and ends with a few lines from DJ Khaled hyping up the two artists.
Fans are loving the collaboration. The remix even reached No. 1 on iTunes after its release on Monday. Latto put out her second studio album, 777, last Friday. It’s a follow-up to her debut album, 2020’s Queen of da Souf.

Latto Talks About Working with Carey on the Remix
Latto responded to a fan on Twitter Monday, explaining that she first thought of Carey for the remix back in November, but she “didn’t think I could get her realistically.” Eventually, Latto wrote, “I said f*ck it and reached out. She was down.”
In another Twitter response, Latto said she was nervous to meet Carey. However, she wrote that Carey was “so genuine and I definitely was overthinking.” Latto also told Variety that Carey gave her great advice, and they bonded over their similar experiences in the music industry.
“She was just saying how hard she had to work to [get] where she got, being in a generation where there wasn’t a lot of biracial females [in music] at the time and all of her hardships coming up,” Latto shared. “I can relate to her on not feeling white enough or not feeling Black enough, and not feeling like I had a place to fit in growing up.”
