Former American Idol judge Keith Urban was recently asked to share his thoughts on Carrie Underwood joining the show’s panel next season. Urban had only nice things to say, as he called Underwood a “perfect fit” for the show.
Keith Urban Reacts to Carrie Underwood on American Idol
Urban was a judge on American Idol from Season 12 to 15. He also happens to be friends with Underwood, having collaborated with her on a song called “The Fighter” earlier this year. Entertainment Tonight recently asked him to share his thoughts on Underwood joining Idol.
“Heck yeah,” Urban said. “She’s perfect for it. She knows exactly what everybody on the other side of the desk is going through. Lionel [Richie] doesn’t, Luke [Bryan] doesn’t. She’s gonna bring something really extraordinary to that seat.”
Underwood was a contestant on Idol in Season 4, ultimately winning the show and going on to have a successful career in country music. She’s the first judge to have previously competed on the show, which brings a unique perspective to the table.

Urban Jokes That Underwood ‘Can Handle Luke’
When asked if he had any advice for how Underwood can “handle” fellow judge (and fellow country star) Luke Bryan, Urban replied, “Just be herself. That’s all she’s got to do.” He added, “She can handle Luke, trust me.”
Bryan himself previously joked that Underwood would need a gift card to therapy in order to deal with him and Richie, who are entering their eight season as judges. They previously sat on the panel with Katy Perry, who departed the show earlier this year.
Season 23 of American Idol is expected to premiere sometime in early 2025. Longtime host Ryan Seacrest will be back to emcee the show. Last season, Abi Carter was named the winner. Who will earn the title this season? We’ll have to wait and see.
