Katy Perry to Release Digital and Tangible NFTs to Celebrate Vegas Residency
Reading Time: 2 minutes
Fans of Katy Perry are eager to ‘put their money where their mouth is’ after her new NFT announcement on June 30. The American Idol judge is dipping her toes into the world of non-fungible tokens, or NFTs. NFTs will give fans access to rare digital or physical merchandise via cryptocurrency.
The Future of Music Merchandising?
Perry has teamed up with Theta Network to provide the NFT experience for her fans. In the announcement, Perry specifically mentions that her tokens will be tangible. This is a bit strange considering NFTs are typically not tangible. Maybe Perry is using this technique as a new form of merchandising for this 16-show concert series.
For those who may be unfamiliar with NFTs, they’re essentially comprised of unique digital contents similar to trading cards. In this case, Perry’s concert NFTs are like digital souvenirs. Who wouldn’t want Katy Perry memorabilia that literally no one else has?
It’s possible Perry is removing traditional merchandizing for the concert series and replacing it with the NFTs. She also may be providing fans with a rare form of memorabilia such as a hologram like with the Chadwick Boseman tribute NFT. Maybe she’s going the Eminem route and selling action figure NFTs.
Perry might be bringing something entirely different to the world of the music industry and NFTs with her “PLAY” concert series. Instead of selling the traditional DVD of the concert, Perry might have something else up her sleeve. Only time will tell what she and Theta Network will be dropping in the near future.
That’s What You Get for Waking up in Vegas
Perry announced her 16-show Las Vegas residency last month. She’ll be “Waking Up in Vegas” starting December 29 and the show will conclude on March 16, 2022.
In promotional materials, a psychedelic version of the all time classic can be heard in the background, which got me jazzed. It’s totally fitting that she’s performing in Vegas. You can pre-register for the drop on the Theta website.
