“Where We Started” is the title track off country star Thomas Rhett’s sixth studio album, which came out in April. Pop star Katy Perry might seem like an unlikely duet partner, but the pair sounds amazing on the song, which is about appreciating how far you’ve come.
The music video has a dreamlike quality, as Rhett and Perry sing in separate rooms covered in sheets. Perry wears a sheer white dress with a beige corset, showing off long dark hair. Rhett wears jeans and a denim jacket. Both singers have their guitars next to them.
Eventually, the pair meets up, walking past mirrors that show themselves when they were younger. Rhett appears in a football uniform, while Perry holds a guitar. They join forces to sing the final chorus together in the same room.
Rhett Didn’t Think Perry Would Want to Collaborate
When the song came out earlier this year, Rhett shared that a member of his team thought of asking Perry to be featured on the track. Rhett didn’t expect the singer to respond, but she got back to him within 24 hours agreeing to be a part of the song.
“She really put a lot of time and effort into this vocal and it’s one of the best,” Rhett said of Perry’s involvement. “I mean, she’s an incredible singer, but this kind of reminded me of how amazing of a vocalist she is. I just felt like it really came to life.”
The pair teamed up in May of this year to perform “Where We Started” on the American Idol Season 20 finale. The singers stood at the top of two tall staircases on stage before walking down and standing side by side for the end of the track.
