So You Think You Can Dance returns to FOX this summer with a brand new judging panel. This series is finally coming off of a hiatus after its production halted in 2020. The beloved series is coming back to television with a few notable changes.
So You Think You Can Dance announced the celebrities sitting at the panel for season 17. So You Think You Can Dance alum Stephen “tWitch” Boss will sit at the judges table alongside Tony nominated artist Matthew Morrison, and Dancing With the Stars celebrity JoJo Siwa. The only original cast member returning to the series is host Cat Deeley. Siwa shared her excitement for the series on Instagram.
“I am so grateful that I am going to be a judge! It’s such an honor to be a part of this shows come back!!! Don’t miss the season premiere of So You Think You Can Dance on May 18th,” she wrote.
This young celebrity rose to fame on season two of Dance Moms then went on to lead a successful career on Nickelodeon. Ahead of this series, Siwa returned to her dance roots as the second place winner on Dancing With the Stars season 30.
It was clear to fans of the long running series that season 17 would play out differently than others. On March 4, longtime judge Nigel Lythgoe announced his departure from the judging table. It’s evident now that former judges Mary Murphy and Laurieann Gibson are also not returning.
This season of So You Think You Can Dance promises a revamp to the old formatting, considering itself to be brand-new. The network specifies that the brand-new season will feature skilled dancers between the ages of 18 and 30. These dancers will perform in several dance styles including contemporary, tap, hip-hop, and more. Dancers selected will move on to the studio and work with world-renowned choreographers. They will compete in weekly with new challenges and twists introduced throughout the season.
