Jennifer Hudson Wins Again for Work on Aretha Franklin Biopic ‘Respect’

American Idol alum Jennifer Hudson continues to earn accolades for her performance as music legend Aretha Franklin in last year’s biopic Respect. Earlier this month, the singer took home an award from the Palm Springs International Film Festival.

Hudson shared her appreciation for the Chairman’s Award on Instagram, writing, “It is an honor to be in such great company with past recipients such as George Clooney, Regina King, Nicole Kidman and so many other greats. This inspires me to keep going!”
The star went on to thank everyone who worked on Respect, calling the film a “labor of love for our Queen, Aretha Franklin.” Hudson previously won the Breakthrough Performance award at the festival for her role in Dreamgirls, which also earned her the Best Supporting Actress Oscar.
Hudson was chosen for the role of Aretha Franklin by the iconic singer herself, before she passed away in 2018. To go along with the release of the film, Hudson also performed quite a few of Franklin’s famous songs for the soundtrack.

What Other Awards Has She Won for ‘Respect’?
Hudson has racked up quite a few award nominations for her performance as Aretha Franklin, as well as the film’s music. For example, she was recently nominated for a Hollywood Music in Media Award for Best Original Song in a Feature Film for “Here I Am (Singing My Way Home)” as well as Best Original Song – Onscreen Performance for “Respect.”
She was also nominated for three People’s Choice Awards, including Female Movie Star of the Year. She won the Virtuoso Award at the Savannah Film Festival, and has been nominated at the AACTA International Awards, the Detroit Film Critics Society, the Sunset Circle Awards, and the Women’s Image Network Awards.
Hudson is nominated for Outstanding Actress at the upcoming Black Reel Awards, as well as the Satellite Awards. She’s also nominated at this year’s Grammys for Best Compilation Soundtrack for Visual Media and Best Written Song for Visual Media.
