Earlier this year, Perry announced that she will be leaving American Idol after the current season. During an interview with E! News, Perry praised Jelly Roll’s recent appearance on the show as a guest mentor, suggesting that he might be a good substitute for her.
Perry went on to say that she wants “a truth teller” to take her spot at the table next to Lionel Richie and Luke Bryan. She added, “I want someone that is not afraid to tell the truth in a graceful way.”
Jelly recently spoke to Audacy’s K-FROG, and he shared his excitement over Perry mentioning his name as her possible replacement. When asked if he would consider joining the show, he replied. “Of course! I love American Idol.”
Perry had apparently shared the idea with Jelly privately, so he was glad to see that she also brought his name up when asked about it in an interview. As he said, “That’s just who she is, man. Katy is one way all the time.”

Perry Says She’s ‘More Emotional’ with Each Episode
American Idol Season 22 has been airing live shows for the past few weeks, as Perry gets closer and closer to her final episode on the show. Perry told E! News that she gets “a little bit more emotional every single episode.”
“The emotion is real, ’cause the love is real,” Perry shared. “And how much I’ve grown, and how much I’ve been changed by the show, and how emotionally invested I am with every contestant.”
Perry compared herself to a “proud therapist” as she gets to watch the show’s contestants experience “personal growth” in their time on the show. She also told fans to “stay ready” for new music from her after she leaves.
