Darren Leo introduced himself to the CGT judges as a stand-up comedian, sharing that he works in digital marketing during the day. He also explained that he and his partner are both immigrants, and he would love to use the prize money to support their parents’ retirement in their home countries.
The comedian also shared that his partner is an ovarian cancer survivor. When the audience applauded her, Darren joked, “Don’t be sad. We don’t need to use a condom anymore, so it’s OK.” On a more serious note, he said he’d like to donate to women’s cancer research, which he called “grossly underfunded.”
For his audition, Darren told some jokes about Asian stereotypes, including the idea that all Asian men are good at math. He did some mathematic equations to prove why that was an incorrect assumption. The bit made the judges laugh.
Judge Katherine Ryan was especially impressed by Darren’s comedy, telling him she thinks he’s “gonna go really far.” She enjoyed his audition so much, she chose to hit the Golden Buzzer for him. Darren is going straight through to the next round, and he also won $25,000 from CIBC.
Tuesday’s new episode also featured an audition from 15-year-old singer Kyra Daniel, who explained that she’s dealt with bullying and racism. She shared her desire to “change the word with my voice.” Kyra chose to perform a cover of “Black Like Me” by Mickey Guyton.
The audience gave Kyra a standing ovation for the performance. Judge Kardinal Offishall shared that by the end of the song, it “felt like a weight was lifted off my shoulders.” He praised Kyra for using her voice, saying, “I salute you for that.” Kyra received four “yes” votes to move on in the competition.
She wasn’t the only singer to wow the judges during Tuesday’s show. The episode also featured an audition from Yama Laurent, who is originally from Haiti but now lives in Quebec. She shared that she was trained as a doctor, but later turned to singing, saying she heals people with her voice.
Yama went on to sing “It’s a Man’s Man’s Man’s World” by James Brown, showing off a powerhouse voice. The judges gave her a standing ovation, with Howie Mandel calling her a star. She received four “yes” votes to move on in the competition.
