Gabrielle Union is taking time during this lockdown to let her natural hair thrive. Union posted a video on Instagram showing off her curly natural locks. She captioned it “When your natural locks appreciate the lockdown.” Take a look!
She also added, “Unlocking the secret soon” to her caption. Is her own line of hair products or a hair tutorial in her future?
She Claims Hair May Have Been The Reason She Was Booted From ‘AGT’
In late 2019, Union announced that she was fired from America’s Got Talent after one season along with fellow new judge Julianne Hough. Union and Hough “received excessive notes on their physical appearance” with Union being told her hair was “too black” for the show.
Union posted the following video on Instagram after the incident. It shows a collection of photos where she has an array of different hairstyles that she has absolutely rocked in the past. Her caption on the post read: “Unapologetically me. Be comfortable and confident with your whole ass self. It might give others the fluuuxxx but never stop being you. You can shine on your own terms. And if you got something to say 🤷🏾♀️ I dont take notes rooted in anti-blackness. I love me as I am.”
She put out the following tweet after receiving an outpour of support from fans and other celebrities alike.
She Sparked The Revival Of The #BlackHairChallenge On Twitter
Union inspired people to use the hashtag #BlackHairChallenge and share up to four pictures of themselves with different hairstyles to highlight and celebrate the versatility of black hair.
These posts showed that Union has tons of women rallying around her that support her and embrace changing hairstyles.
Even actress Kerry Washington posted four pictures of different hairstyles. Union commented that these posts give her “so much life & specifically more courage.”
She Teamed Up With A Hair Brand To Create Products For Textured Hair
Union collaborated with the brand Macadamia Natural Oil on a line of shampoos, conditioners, styling products and oil treatments made specifically for women with textured hair. After years of using relaxers on her hair, she realized how damaging it was on her scalp. “Cut to lesions, like open wounds in my scalp, trying to chase something that was unrealistic, and eventually probably in my mid- to late-20s I decided to give up my relaxer, and I went natural,” she told HuffPost. She went on to add “By natural I mean underneath the weaves, extensions, clips and the hair colour was my natural hair — thriving.”
We love that Union is embracing her natural hair and that she inspires others to wear their hair however they want to. She is definitely the definition of #girlpower and we can’t wait to see what she does next in her hair journey.
