Former Dancing With The Stars contestant Alexa PenaVega recently opened up about what it’s like to be on the show in a committed relationship. The Spy Kids actress explains how her and husband Carlos PenaVega navigated their relationship while they were on the series.

Alexa PenaVega had to “Set Boundaries” While on Dancing With The Stars

During a recent interview on Cheryl Burkes podcast, Sex, Lies, and Spray Tans, PenaVega spoke about her experience on the series in 2015. For those who may not know, Alexa competed against her husband Carlos PenaVega during the season.

During the beginning of her marriage to Big Time Rush member Carlos PenaVega, the couple went on Dancing With The Stars. Alexa was paired with professional Mark Ballas, while Carlos was paired with Witney Carson.

Alexa admitted that it was “difficult” to watch someone else becoming so close to her husband.

“It was early in our marriage, and we literally said [to each other that] we don’t know how spouses do this show without doing it the way we did,” PenaVega said. “We fully understood the dynamics of the show”

Alexa admits that it was hard seeing another girl dance with her husband on the show.

“For Carlos, at that season of his life, he was such a jealous man that even though he understood the dynamic, it was still hard for him,” she said. “You know how it is: It is incredibly flirty.”

At the time, the couple set proactive boundaries for how they would interact with their partners. Apparently, this became “super hard” to maintain. Alas, they stuck to what they agreed upon.

She Details Her Experience with Mark Ballas

While talking about her boundaries on the show, Alexa PenaVega admitted that she would have to stop her professional partner, when things got too flirty. She even explained that both her partner and Carlos’ partner we’re told about their boundaries going into the season.

“I love Mark. We got along great. But, like, if it was ever flirty, I’d just be, like, ‘I don’t do that,'” she said. “I was a little mean, but it was only to set good boundaries. And then we figured it out, and we ended up having a really great partnership.”

The married couple was extremely clear to their professional partners, stating: “You guys are our partners, and we are so excited to team up with you, but that doesn’t mean we ditch our marriage and this becomes our No. 1. Our marriage is still first.”

Alexa explained that both Ballas and Carson were able to respect their boundaries. Instead, she explains that “the producers” had more of an issue with these boundaries than the actual dance partners.

“[They were] trying to make it like, ‘Alexa only cares about her husband. She doesn’t care about the competition at all,'” she said.

Later, Alexa admitted that the overall experience was great. She just feels that the “behind-the-scenes” can be tough.
