Former Dancing with the Stars pro Cheryl Burke recently got honest about celebrity-pro romances on the competition series. She advised celebrities to “be single” when they compete on the show, because they might develop feelings for their partner.
Cheryl Burke Tells DWTS Celebrities to ‘Be Single’
During a recent episode of Burke’s podcast Sex, Lies, and Spray Tans, People magazine’s senior editor Dave Quinn asked her why celebrities and their professional partners sometimes pursue romance outside the ballroom.
“It’s an arranged marriage… And it is black and white. Either love each other or hate each other for real,” Burke explained. “It’s so intimate, and you’re stuck with this person… you better try and make it work at least.”
She went on to share that celebrity contestants have to be “so vulnerable” in order to go far in the competition, which is something they might not have even done with their real-life partners.
“Be single if you do Dancing with Stars. That’s all I’m saying,” Burke advised future contestants.

Burke Admits to ‘Showmances’ During Time as a Pro
During her conversation with Quinn, he asked if she had ever fallen in love with one of her celebrity partners during her time on the show. She admitted to having three “showmances” over the years, which she attributed to “lust.”
“It’s not love, right?” Burke said. “It is in that moment. Then you’re like, ‘Wait a second, how is this person, like in the real world?’”
Although she apparently never fell in love with any of her partners, she did end up marrying Matthew Lawrence, the brother of former DWTS contestants Joey Lawrence — who was paired up with Edyta Śliwińska in Season 3.
Burke and Lawrence tied the knot in 2019. In 2022, after nearly three years of marriage, Burke filed for divorce.
