Grande shared a brief sneak peek of the new song on social media Wednesday, writing that fans can expect to listen to it on Friday, December 3. She also shared a link to pre-save the film’s soundtrack. In the preview, Grande’s voice can be heard against a soft piano backing.
Don’t Look Up will premiere on Netflix December 24. The movie, directed by Adam McKay, focuses on two astronomers, played by Leonardo DiCaprio and Jennifer Lawrence, who embark on a media tour to warn the world of an impending comet that will destroy the planet.
The film’s star-studded cast includes Meryl Street, Cate Blanchett, Jonah Hill, and Timothée Chalamet. Grande and Kid Cudi also both appear in the movie as the characters Riley Bina and DJ Chello. Grande’s character Riley is, appropriately, a pop star.
Grande Performs the Song in the Movie
The song “Just Look Up” was recently nominated at the Hollywood Music in Media Awards in the category of Song – Feature Film and Song – Onscreen Performance. Grande and Kid Cudi (whose real name is Scott Mescudi) co-wrote the song with Taura Stinson and the film’s composer Nicholas Britell.
Grande and Mescudi perform the song in the movie. As director Adam McKay told Variety, the track is supposed to be “the song to save all of mankind.” He added, “It might be my favorite moment in the movie. The No. 1 pop star in the world telling us, ‘We’re all going to die, get your head out of your ass.’”
Meanwhile, star Jennifer Lawrence said she “went full radio contest winner” on Grande during filming. As she recalled, “I was so excited and nervous that at one point, I just kind of walked into her hotel room and sat down.”
