‘American Idol’ is Not on Tonight, Here’s What to Expect From Next Week’s Finale
Reading Time: 2 minutes
American Idol isn’t on tonight, in case you were looking forward to watching the Season 20 finale. The show has moved to a Sunday-only schedule for the last few episodes of the season. It will return for the three-hour season finale on Sunday, May 22.
What to Expect from Next Week’s ‘American Idol’ Finale
On Sunday night’s new episode, the audience voted live for their favorite singers, and the Top 5 was narrowed down to the Top 3. HunterGirl, Noah Thompson, and Leah Marlene made it through, as we said goodbye to Fritz Hager and Nicolina.
The Top 3 are headed home this week for the show’s traditional hometown visits. Then on Sunday night, they’ll take the stage one last time for a chance to be named this season’s winner. One round of the American Idol finale will be dedicated to Bruce Springsteen.
The Top 7 also recorded original songs, which they released last week. Since the Top 5 didn’t perform these singles during this week’s show, it’s likely that the Top 3 will perform them during the finale. HunterGirl’s song is “Red Bird,” Noah’s is “One Day Tonight,” and Leah’s is “Flowers.”

The Episode Will Feature Several Famous Names
In addition to seeing the Top 3 perform one last time, the American Idol finale will also feature performances from some famous names in music. With a three-hour runtime, there will be plenty of time to kill as we wait for the winner announcement.
All three judges (Katy Perry, Lionel Richie, and Luke Bryan) will take the stage to perform during the finale. This week’s mentor Carrie Underwood will also perform, as will former finalist Gabby Barrett. Eliminated contestant Christian Guardino will sing with Michael Bublé.
Other performers include Thomas Rhett, Ben Platt, James Arthur, Sara Bareilles, Deana Carter, Flo Rida, Melissa Etheridge, Tai Verdes, and Earth, Wind & Fire. Considering eliminated singer Nicolina auditioned with “She Used to Be Mine” from Waitress, there’s a good chance she’ll be performing with Bareilles.
Be sure to tune in for the American Idol Season 20 finale Sunday, May 22, on ABC.
