The New ‘AGT Champions’ VOTING System Explained
Reading Time: 2 minutes
AGT: The Champions returns tonight for Season 2, and there are a few differences from last year. The show is prerecorded, so viewers still can’t vote on who moves forward, but you might notice some changes in how the successful acts are chosen.
Read on to refresh your memory about the AGT “superfans,” and find out what new rules to expect when you tune in this season.
‘AGT: Champions’ New Voting System
This year, ten acts will compete in each of the four preliminary rounds. However, a semifinals round has been added to this year’s competition, which affects how many acts move forward.
Last season, two acts from each preliminary round moved straight to the finals — one chosen by the superfans, and one earning a Golden Buzzer from one of the judges. This year, three acts from each preliminary round will move on to the semifinals, and another one will receive the Golden Buzzer and go straight to the finals.

AGT Superfans and Judges Choice
According to the AGT website, advancing acts are determined by superfans and judges. The two of the semifinals acts in each round will be chosen by the superfans, and one will be a Judges’ Choice.)
In the semifinals, 12 acts will be cut in half, with six acts moving on to compete against the four Golden Buzzer recipients in the finals. This seems to suggest that there will be no wildcards this year, although you never know.
No Live Voting For ‘AGT: Champions’
Just like last year, the results of America’s Got Talent: The Champions have already been determined, so viewers won’t be able to vote for their favorites live. Instead, the show recruited “superfans” to represent America’s vote in each round.
WHO ARE THE MYSTERIOUS ‘SUPERFANS’ VOTING FOR ‘AGT: THE CHAMPIONS’?
Last year, NBC explained to Gold Derby that these superfans were not in the audience during the show. Rather, they watched the show “off-camera in a controlled environment within the show’s venue.” It wasn’t the same group of people each week, but there was some cross-over between episodes.
Do you wish you could vote for your favorite acts on America’s Got Talent: The Champions, or does this take some of the pressure off as you enjoy the show? Either way, tune in to the Season 2 premiere tonight at 8/7c on NBC.
