Sophie Fatu on 'America's Got Talent'

America’s Got Talent Season 13 contestant Sophie Fatu has decided that she no longer wishes to be on social media. The singer, who auditioned for the show when she was 5 years old, had an Instagram account run by her mother, who has chosen to respect Sophie’s decision.

AGT Star Sophie Fatu Chooses to Leave Social Media

Sophie Fatu is one of the youngest contestants to ever audition for AGT. When she was just 5 years old, she sang “My Way” by Frank Sinatra for the show’s judges, earning four “yes” votes to move on. She ended up being eliminated in the Judge Cuts.

Sophie’s mother Victoria Volz recently posted an announcement on her daughter’s Instagram account. She explained that she has spent over 10 years managing Sophie’s social media, but had promised her daughter that “if one day she decides she no longer wants to be on social media, there will be no questions asked.”

That day has apparently come, as Volz shared that Sophie, who is currently 13 years old, “no longer wants to have her social media or have any social media pages associated with her name,” adding, “I tried to reason, try to explain, try to compromise and come to solutions, but she had her mind made up and there’s nothing I can do but respect it, and honor her wishes.”

As of this writing, all posts on Sophie’s Instagram account except this announcement have disappeared, although several archived Instagram stories are still visible. Volz posted a similar message on Sophie’s Facebook page, but previous posts have not yet been deleted there. Volz shared her intention to continue posting about her family on her own account.

How Did Fans Respond to Sophie’s Decision?

Comments on Volz’s Instagram post were largely supportive of Sophie Fatu’s decision to leave social media, although not everyone had positive things to say about Volz herself. As one user asked, “WHY was she on social media as a kid anyway?”

“Parents use their children for their own desires and profits without their consent because a child is not in a situation of giving consent,” the comment continues. “I’m happy this girl came to an age of making her own decisions.”

Other commenters praised Sophie for valuing her privacy, with one user writing, “She sounds very mature and logical.” Another wrote, “Let her live her life privately, if that’s what she wants.”
