Lionel Richie on 'American Idol'

Lionel Richie recent underwent a heart procedure and had to cancel a few performances on his current tour. Will the 77-year-old music legend be healthy enough to return to the American Idol judging panel next season?

Will Lionel Richie Return to American Idol?

Last month, it was reported that Lionel Richie had undergone “a common procedure for Atrial fibrillation (AFib),” with his rep sharing, “The doctor said everything went perfectly. Lionel is doing great but will take some time off and will be back on stage soon.”

Richie had to cancel three shows on his current tour with Earth, Wind & Fire as he recovers from the procedure. He’s expected to return to the stage for his Las Vegas residency at the Encore Theater at Wynn Las Vegas beginning October 14.

Not long after Richie’s heart procedure, it was announced that he would be returning to the American Idol judging panel for Season 25, alongside Carrie Underwood and Luke Bryan. However, a report from celebrity journalist Rob Shuter last month claimed that the show was looking for a potential replacement.

“They’re already discussing names,” a source shared. “Nobody is firing Lionel today, but his seat is no longer something producers can simply assume is filled. His health has changed the conversation.”

Could Richie Be Replaced at the Last Minute?

Shuter’s source shared that American Idol was searching for “someone else ready to sit in that chair” in case Lionel Richie is unable to “handle the schedule” going into Season 25 of the show, which will be filming in Georgia for the first time.

“Lionel wants to come back, and Idol wants Lionel,” the source said of the singer’s future on the talent show. “But wanting him back and knowing he can do the job are two different things. They need a Plan B.”
