Finishing off his Mathematics Tour stop in New Jersey, Ed Sheeran has set a new record for MetLife Stadium concert crowd. The pop superstar passes Taylor Swift, who made similar accomplishment less than a month ago.
Ed Sheeran Sets New Concert Attendance Record at MetLife Stadium
Making concert history in East Rutherford, Sheeran celebrated his music with a total of 89,106 fans in the audience. This record ousts Taylor Swift’s past record of 82,000 attendees in her Eras Tour. Consequently, this has marked Sheeran’s largest U.S. concert yet.
The “Thinking Out Loud” hitmaker also surpassed the concert record of rock band U2, who gathered 88,491 fans back in 2011 during their worldwide 360-degree tour. Sheeran also passed the likes of Bruce Springsteen and Metallica, despite them having sold-out tickets in the same entertainment venue.
Interestingly, Sheeran’s concert stage design has something to do with his new history record. His performing platform was constructed in the center of the stadium and in-the-round style, allowing fans to be seated in all stadium sections. This was unlike other concert stage designs before where large video screens were put at one end of the floor, thus obstructing the audiences’ view.
He Reflects on This Concert Milestone
In a on Instagram, Sheeran took the time to reflect on the milestone. According to him, it’s feels surreal that he played in front of a huge crowd.
“Played my biggest ever USA show today and broke the ticket record at MetLife,” he said. “I really don’t take this for granted, my dad told me if you can make it in New York you can make it anywhere, and today was really reminiscing about playing my first show at mercury lounge in 2012 to 130 people. It feels like a dream today.”
Subsequently, Sheeran posted a video summarizing his weekend in New Jersey. The video shows Sheeran handing out Tingly Ted’s hot sauce to fans before the main event. During the same weekend, Sheeran also enjoyed a fun karaoke night with Lil Nas X. The two sang “Baby One More Time” by Britney Spears.
