The Best ‘The Voice’ Battle Advisors Who Knew the Power of Music

One of the many things that separates The Voice from other singing competition shows are the mentors that they bring on each season. From coaches to battle advisors, they mentors are meant to help guid the contestants. The aspiring singers who are vying for the year’s trophy, and the $100,000 cash prize, are lucky to not only have the coaches who are there every week, but also some of the top music acts that have dominated the music industry at one point or another. Here’s a look back at some of the greatest Battle Advisors we’ve seen on the show so far.


Diana Ross Season 7

There is no way we can have a list that does not include a woman who has changed music. Ross was influential on how we listen to music today. The Motown singer has an ear like no other. Contestants were lucky that they were able to sing in front of the Boss Miss Ross.

Season 7 showed the legend joining Pharrell’s team as a battle advisor. Pharrell said it was a “dream come true” to have her there. During the show, Ross helped a contestant who fumbled his lyrics in the past. The singer reassured him that she messes up at times too.

Dua Lipa Season 18

Dua Lipa is possibly one of the biggest stars in today’s music. Her pop hits have dominated the charts since first hitting the radio. When she joined Team Kelly as an advisor, she was honored to be there. During her time, she shared singing secrets to young contestants and was able to help them through the pressure they were currently facing.

Miguel Season 5

Ratings continued to be a hit during the fifth season of The Voice. Miguel came in to advise Cee Lo Green’s team. The singer has one of the most unique and established sounds in today’s music. It is no wonder why he came on to the show that had a mission to find voices that were different. At the time, Miguel’s “Adorn” was the biggest song on the chart. The singer was hoping to make a positive impact on the contestants, and he showed his passion for music throughout the episode.

Shawn Mendes Season 14

Alicia Keys was coming off her win with Season 12 champion, Chris Blue, and she was ready to create magic once again. She recruited global superstar Shawn Mendes to advise her team on Season 14 of The Voice. The singers share a love for music as well as their skills on the piano.

Mendes was in disbelief that Keys called, but Keys understood the demographic of the show as well as her team members. On the show, Mendes wanted to be a mentor who could relate to how the contestants performed. Still, he thought he should have been on the mic performing for Keys.

Celine Dion Season 12

Season 12 showed Dion joining on as the mentor for Gwen Stefani’s team. The coaches were all in awe of the legend and excited that she was on the show. Dion is a singer’s singer, and her voice alone has made millions cry. The raw emotion she puts into her songs and her electrifying performances in Las Vegas and beyond, made her a perfect match for the singing competition. Stefani was shocked that the show was able to get a singer on Dion’s level.

Brandy Season 20

Those in the music industry call her The Vocal Bible. Brandy has been in the industry since a young age, and has been mentored by singers such as Whitney Houston. In Season 20 she was a battle advisor for Team Legend. The singer’s career is the stuff of legends, and the contestants knew it. She surprised members of Team Legend after he mentioned Brandy’s early hit, “Baby” will be performed. From her tone to her musical runs, advice from the singer is a gem like none other.

Darren Criss Season 20

Coach Nick Jonas enlisted his Broadway pal, Darren Criss, as a mentor during Season 20’s Battle Round. It was a welcomed gift to have someone with Criss’s vocal technique on the show. Broadway stars often have some of the best voices in music. Criss’s successful run on TV and on Broadway, made him a great mentor who helped contestants with their stage presence.
