Shawn Mendes and Camila Cabello announced they have broken off their relationship. This couple has been a well known power duo since they confirmed their relationship in 2019, but they will move forward as “best friends.” The couple released a joint statement sharing the devastating news.
On Wednesday the couple released a statement on their Instagram stories sharing that they have broken it off after more than two years of dating. Although it may disappoint fans, the couple has announced that they will remain friends. Hopefully we’ll see some power duets from them in the future.
“Hey guys, we’ve decided to end our romantic relationship but our love for one another as humans is stronger than ever,” they wrote in their statement. “We started our relationship as best friends and will continue to be best friends. We so appreciate your support from the beginning and moving forward.”
This couple began dating on July 4, 2019, but have been friends since early 2014. In Shawn Mendes’ 2020 Netflix documentary the singer admitted that the couple both opened for Austin Mahone, but didn’t become close friends until the following year at a Taylor Swift concert.
Mendes was the opening act at this concert and his friendship with Cabello truly began after that. From there on the two singers began to write a song together. Cabello noted that during that time Mendes liked her, but she had no idea.
“For the past four years, [going from] just being friends and not being able to see each other very often to finally being able to be together,” said Mendes in the documentary. “She was always there to look out for me as a human being. She’s got my back, and I think that’s what your partner’s for.”
Both singers have always shared their love for one another in interviews, but kept an extremely private relationship. Most of the time this couple was seen either singing together, or eating out in paparazzi shots. Even though their relationship was super private, the couple talked about tying the knot multiple times.

At one point, fans thought they were engaged because Cabello was spotted with a ring on her finger. Over the summer, fans began to speculate this celebrity engagement based off TikTok videos where Cabello is wearing a giant ring on her left hand. However, Cabello denied rumors before they went out of control.
“I swear to God, I don’t know what hand the engagement ring goes on, so sometimes I’ll just put it on my ring finger. I mean, I’d actually like you to enlighten me — which hand is the engagement hand?” said Cabello.
It’s sad to see this couple broken up after more than two years together. Many fans of them adored their mutual respect for one another. They’ve created some really catchy tunes together, so I hope their friendship brings more to their discography. Clearly, it doesn’t seem like there is any bad blood between the two, but I still hope for an easy transition back to friends.
