Shakira Calls Out Her Mother-In-Law’s Awful Style Advice

It seems that mama doesn’t always know best. Colombian superstar Shakira jokingly called out her mother-in-law’s awful style advice in a new episode of British Vogue’s Life in Looks YouTube series. While the singer has served up some fabulous fashion moments through the years, there are some looks that should’ve been kept on the rack. The former coach of The Voice claims she is never taking cosmetic advice from husband Gerard Pique’s mom ever again.
Shakira’s Horrific Fashion Disaster
In the video, Shakira puts her mother-in-law on blast for her questionable blonde bob. The Grammy winner flaunted the look while being honored by the French Ministry of Culture in 2012.
“Oh wow, how terrible, that’s a really bad haircut. I took advice from my mother-in-law. She said ‘Hey, why don’t you cut your hair? It’s really damaged.’ And me: ‘Ah, uh-huh,'” Shakira recalled after seeing the photo. “Worst mistake of my life. Mother-in-law, I’m not taking cosmetic advice from you again.”
The artist married professional soccer player Gerard Piqué just a year before the incident. Despite the off-putting choppy bob, the dress she wore to the event was very flattering. The ensemble was designed by the late Azzedine Alaïa, a great friend of Shakira who styled her regularly. The short fit and flare concept worked well with the singer’s proportions, complementing her figure.
“His style has always gelled with the female figure, with a woman who’s not very tall,” she said of the embroidered number. “So, they always suited me. It’s a shame about my haircut, mother-in-law.”
Shakira’s Fashion Hits on MTV
From the 19 looks Shakira broke down in the series, not all were classified as fashion disasters. Her looks from the MTV Video music awards stood out on the red carpet every time. In 2001, the star popped out with a look reminiscent of Xena: Warrior Princess. The outfit featured a feather bustier, headband tiara, and brown leather pants designed by the artist herself.
“Sometimes I design my own things to get myself out of a tight spot,” Shakira shared in her British Vogue episode. “When I can’t find what I want it’s down to me.”
Shakira’s 2005 MTV Video Music Award look incorporated an earthy vibe. This outfit was everything. The sexy two-piece featured a golden bralette, green cargo pants, and signature belly dancer chain. The look allowed Shakira to show off her famous hips during her performance of “La Tortura” with Alejandro Sanz.
Shakira may not let her mother-in-law live it down for the bad haircut, but the good looks definitely outweigh the bad. The pop sensation had me believing I could be a belly dancer at seven years old. If that’s not some star level influencing, I don’t know what is. Let’s be real, my girl had some signature style. I can forget about one fashion mishap for the greater good of a generation. Shakira has been and always will be fabulous.
