Katy Perry and her fellow American Idol judges recently sat down to talk to Good Morning America about Season 22 of the show. Perry touched on her decision to leave the show after this season, teasing that she might be back on the panel in the future.
Katy Perry Talks About Leaving American Idol
Perry confirmed that she’s leaving American Idol “for now,” adding that the show “has healed my heart.” She added, “I feel so connected to America that I want to go out there again and sing and play music and hold their hands.”
When asked what type of person she would want to replace her on the judging panel, Perry joked she would like “someone that can put up with Luke and Lionel.” Lionel Richie said they’ll “hold the spot,” to which Perry responded, “Keep my seat warm.”
Perry announced her decision to leave the show back in February during an interview with Jimmy Kimmel. The singer teased that she has “some things planned for this year,” adding that she’s “been in the studio for a while.”
“I want to go and see the world, and maybe bring new music,” Perry said of her plans once Season 22 wraps up.
During their interview with GMA, the judges talked about their experience finding stars through the American Idol process. When asked how they determine if a singer has the it factor, Perry said it’s “different for all of us.”
“It can be just like a ghostly shimmer of a glimmer,” Perry added of how she notices if a singer has a star quality about them. “It could just go whoosh, and you’re like, ‘What is that?'”
Luke Bryan shared that he’s always “studying everything they’re doing, because I’m just so interested in what they’re about.” Richie said he notices a “possession time” when performers “turn into themselves” on stage.
“It’s fun watching them blossom and come to life in front of our eyes,” Bryan said. “America sees where they come from, and their home. You get a real representation of what the American journey is about.”
