The great Birkin debate of 2020 all started when Saweetie and rapper Quavo posted that a woman should dump a man if he does not buy her a Birkin bag. The bags do not come cheap as they cost around $15,000 or more which is why the post had mixed comments from fans. Other celebrities like Yaya Mayweather then took to social media to discuss the significance of buying a Birkin.
Yaya Mayweather Spoke Out About The Debate Surrounding Birkin Bags
Yaya’s mother Melissia Rene took to Instagram live to show off her closet full of Birkin bags. The Shade Room reposted the video which was met with some controversial comments. Yaya is the daughter of boxer Floyd Mayweather. “I really want to comment on this whole ‘Birkin topic’ but I’ma just sit this one out because I don’t want to have some of y’all in a frenzy,” she first posted on Instagram. “Just know when you speaking Birkins you speaking Iyanna Mayweather, and if you feel otherwise let’s argue!”
“Wait a minute… this is getting out of hand,” Yaya posted. “I’m starting to see too many people on this app with Birkins like their just some regular bags that you can go buy. Some of these Birkins gotta be fake and I’m not saying everybody’s is fake. I’m not trying to be funny but let’s make something crystal clear. For one, you can’t just walk into an Hermès store and buy a Birkin. You have to be like a member in order to buy them. Two even if you are a member you can only buy so many a year (and because of this is why my dad sometimes goes overseas to purchase them).”
The 20-year-old also reportedly showed off her pregnant belly in a now-deleted post leading people to assume she is pregnant with her first child with rapper NBA YoungBoy. The couple has had their share of legal issues, with Yaya facing jail for life after a fight with one of the rapper’s baby mama’s. YoungBoy was recently accused of attacking a man in Texas.
Yaya’s Post Led To Some Heated Discussions
Rapper Offset then got himself into the drama by posting about buying his wife Cardi B numerous Birkin bags. “Stop letting people on the internet tell ya’ll who can get a Birkin at the store, and how many Birkin’s you can get,” he wrote on Instagram. “Black people having access to luxury shouldn’t be a debate…by the way hip hop starts the trends!”
“First things first, I definitely could get a bag– actually I got four bags today from the Hermès store” Cardi chimed in on her own Instagram. “That’s one. I don’t wanna brag but it’s like, don’t even try it. Second of all, why is it that y’all asking female rappers if they can get a bag from the Hermès store? Y’all don’t do that to these white celebrities. So, why is it that y’all gotta be asking us? What the f*ck?”
Yaya wrote on her Instagram story that she did not know if Offset’s post was directly throwing shade at her.
