One of the most emotional moments on The X Factor UK came in 2011, when a singer named Lascel Wood auditioned for the show and shared his emotional story.

Lascel was in and out of foster care growing up, but he brought his mom to his audition. He said it was the first time she would ever hear him perform. Check out his powerful audition below.

Before his audition, 20-year-old Lascel shared that he went into foster care at age 4 because of his mom’s bipolar disorder. “It wasn’t her fault,” Lascel said. “It was down to her having this illness that she couldn’t help.”

Lascel also shared that, although he’s close with his mom, she’s never seen him perform before. For his audition, Lascel performed “Use Somebody” by Kings of Leon. As he sang, his mom could be seen crying off stage.

Lascel earned a standing ovation from the audience and the judges for his performance. Judge Tulisa encouraged Lascel’s mom to join him on stage. The audience cheered for her.

Kelly Rowland Tears Up Over Lascel’s Performance

Judge Kelly Rowland in particular was very emotional over Lascel’s audition. “First of all, I don’t know you, but I’m so proud of you to come here today,” he told Lascel, adding that his relationship with his mother is “so beautiful.”

Gary Barlow said Lascel had “great pitch” and “great timing,” and added, “More importantly than that was that I believed every single word that you sang to us.” Louis Walsh added, “You deserve to be on that stage.”

Lascel was eliminated in the bootcamp round of the competition, but he’s still performing. You can check out his YouTube channel to see him cover songs like “Never Enough” and “Rise Up.”
