You might have noticed Evan Peters trending on Twitter Tuesday. The American Horror Story star came under fire for something he retweeted in the midst of protests against police brutality.

Evan later deleted the retweet and posted a black square for Blackout Tuesday, but Twitter users were quick to call him out for his previous message. He’s since responded to the controversy.

People were quick to call Evan out for his retweet, comparing him to his Trump-supporting character on American Horror Story: Cult. As one user wrote, “always wondered how Evan Peters played that racist so well.”

Evan has since deleted that retweet and posted a black box on his page. Many social media users are posting these squares as part of Blackout Tuesday, to show solidarity with the Black Lives Matter movement.

However, people hadn’t forgotten about his previous retweet, and made sure to call him out in the responses to his tweet. A few minutes later, Evan posted a response to the controversy.

Evan Says He Hit Retweet By Mistake

Evan Peters tweeted that he “unknowingly retweeted” the video, and that he does not “condone” the man in the video. “I’m deeply upset it got on my newsfeed,” he wrote. “I sincerely apologize if anyone was offended.” He added that he supports Black Lives Matter “wholeheartedly.”

But not everyone was convinced. Some people pointed out that Evan would have had to hit two separate buttons to retweet the video, and didn’t believe he could have done so unintentionally. Others encouraged him to donate or share resources instead of just posting a black box.

Meanwhile, Evan’s ex-girlfriend Halsey liked a tweet from someone asking if his retweet is “why Halsey broke up with you.” The pair were rumored to have split earlier this year after she deleted images of Evan from her Instagram.
