Why Does ‘Megan Fox Is Filipino’ Keep Trending Every Now And Then?
You might have noticed that a lot of Twitter users are tweeting about actress Megan Fox being Filipino. In fact, the hashtag #meganfoxisfilipino was actually trending on Twitter Friday.
As it turns out, the hashtag and accompanying tweets are actually a joke, but it’s hard to figure out where it originated. Read on to see what some users have said to explain where this meme suddenly came from.
Is Megan Fox Really Filipino?
For the record, Megan Fox is not Filipino, as far as we know. However, many Filipino Twitter users have been posting as if she is. Some of the tweets are more believable than others. Some of them also appear to contain inside jokes about Filipino culture.
People have Photoshopped fake tweets of Megan speaking Tagalog, as well as wearing Filipino-style clothing. One person tweeted, “it makes me so happy to see someone who looks like me represented in the media.
Many of the users tweeting with the hashtag seem amused by the confusion it has caused. Some people have asked for an explanation about why the hashtag was trending, but many of the responses are either continuing the joke or causing even more confusion.
Why Is This Hashtag Trending In The First Place?
Many Twitter users shared their confusion over the hashtag’s existence. Some seemed to think maybe Megan really was revealed to be Filipino, while others seemed uncertain about why people were joking that she was.
One user explained that the hashtag started after someone called Megan “one of their favorite asians.” However, it’s hard to find a tweet with this sentiment that isn’t part of the joke.
Another user said people were “making fun of how the only thing ppl advocate for is representation & how most of the time we’re desperate.” However, that doesn’t really explain why the topic is trending right now.
Other explanations included a Filipino model wearing a Megan Fox mask, and a manipulated tweet with Megan speaking Tagalog. But those both appear to be created for the sake of the hashtag.
Like so many things on the internet, it’s extremely difficult to find the source of the trend. We have to wonder what Megan Fox thinks of the whole thing, if she even knows about it.
