Why Are There So Many One Chair Turns On ‘The Voice’ This Season?

You may have noticed that Season 18 of The Voice has had quite a few one chair turns. That was especially true of this week’s episode, as several artists were automatically placed onto a team.

No, you’re not imagining it, and it’s not just a coincidence. The coaches are getting very picky, and there’s a simple reason for it. The show has implemented a small change in format that has a big impact on how the coaches strategize.

So Many One Chair Turns On ‘The Voice’

Although you may not have realized it until last night, the coaches only have 10 spots on their teams this season. In the past, they’ve been able to choose 12 artists to work with.

That may not seem like much of a difference, but it seems to have made the coaches much pickier, much earlier in the blind auditions than we’re used to seeing. That’s likely why there was only one four-chair turn for two weeks in a row.

It also means that many talented artists are getting turned away, and others are only getting one coach to turn around. On Monday night, there were five one chair turns. At one point, Blake Shelton said he felt like he was “robbing a bank” being the only one to turn.

“Teams of 10 is new this season,” Blake said at one point, “and it kinda changes up your strategy a little bit, because it leaves less room for error. You gotta be sure you get that right artist on your team.”

What Else Is Different About ‘The Voice’ This Season?

More one chair turns aren’t the only difference we can expect this season on The Voice. There will also be fewer live shows, with only three weeks instead of the usual five or six.

“It makes the stakes higher than ever,” executive producer Audrey Morrissey told Parade, adding that there will be “some really exciting twists.” She also explained that this season will feature the show’s “first-ever four-way knockout,” which will be voted on by the viewers. The results will be announced in the first live show.

What do you think about these changes in format? Are there too many one chair turns this season? Not enough four chair turns? Does it take away the competition between coaches? Let us know in the comments.
