Who Is The Masked Rat That Is Taking Over The NYC Subways?

If you have been on TikTok or Instagram lately, you have definitely seen the masked rat that has become an internet sensation. The rat who is formally known as Buddy The Rat has been taking over NYC, one landmark at a time. This time he was caught riding the subways like a true New Yorker. So, who is under the mask?
People Think Buddy The Rat Is Actually This Controversial Rapper
While this definitely sounds like an episode of The Masked Singer, it’s actually just typical NYC living. On the subway video posted by The Shade Room, people in the comments section believe they know who is under the mask. One comment on the Instagram post says “6ix9ine enough is enough.” Another says “6ix9ine gotta chill” while another person said “TEKASHI MOVE…I ain’t got time today.” It is clear that people think rapper Tekashi 6ix9ine is under the mask.

One of the main reasons people believe Buddy The Rat is actually Tekashi 6ix9ine is because he was labeled a rat. The rapper went to jail for a multitude of charges including racketeering and carrying a firearm. He was called a snitch and a rat after he specifically referenced other gang members by name in his testimony when he was arrested earlier this year. He even named people who were a part of violent acts including assault and kidnapping. The rapper was released from prison after being at a higher risk during the coronavirus outbreak because of his asthma.
The Man Under The Mask Is…
Well, this may come as a surprise to some people but the man under the rat mask is not Tekashi 6ix9ine. It is actually Jonothon Lyons under the mask. The performance artist works in theater and puppetry so this whole experience is right up his alley. According to the New York Post, Jonothon created Buddy The Rat 11 years ago.
He brought back the viral rat mask to record a short film that is coming out on Thanksgiving. It definitely has helped lighten the mood while there is so much going on in the world. Literally a human rat walking down the street is the least of our concerns, and New Yorkers remain unphased. Jonothon has posted a ton of videos dressed as Buddy The Rat over on his Instagram page. He recreated the viral pizza rat video that one New Yorker previously filmed in 2015. This time Jonothon nibbled on an oversized fake piece of pizza.
In another video, Buddy The Rat rode the escalator at the train station on all fours. He also ran through Times Square and perched on top of a garbage can.
Who did you think was under the iconic rat mask? Not even The Masked Singer judges would have been able to predict this.
