Tyler Golden/NBC First, let me set the scene for you. It’s 2012 and the third season of The Voice is beginning. Everything is going as planned, then a familiar face pops up on the screen. Is that…? No, it couldn’t be. What happened next was the weirdest Blind Audition to-date!
As coaches Adam Levine, CeeLo Green, Christina Aguilera, and Blake Shelton listen on, this is what they hear.
Yes, that was Cupid. Singing the “Cupid Shuffle.” On The Voice.
*cringes*
Cupid’s Blind Audition on The Voice
Let’s break down exactly what happened here. Cupid came to The Voice hoping to prove that he could actually sing. While he had a huge hit on the radio, many fans didn’t think he was a talented vocalist. This is reminiscent of T-Pain’s story as the Monster on The Masked Singer. Once you become known for something, it’s hard to shake that idea out of people’s minds. Wanting to prove your vocal prowess is understandable!
So what does Cupid decide to do? Sing that EXACT SAME SONG he is known for in his Blind Audition. Yes, the one that led everyone to believe he couldn’t sing. And of course, none of the coaches pressed their buttons.
I’m not the only one who thought this didn’t make any sense either. As soon as coach CeeLo Green turned around at the end, he recognized Cupid! CeeLo encouraged him to sing another song and Cupid busted out Marvin Gaye. I will admit that from that clip, his voice is a lot more impressive. All the coaches were hitting their buttons! At that point though, it was too late.
After The Voice
But don’t fret! Cupid still said that this was great for his career. The opportunity allowed him to sing in front of millions of people to prove himself. And the minute he got off the show, his phone was ringing with artists wanting to collaborate with him. So in the end, it allowed him to come back into the music scene. He feels like being able to sing on such a huge platform, even without finding success, accomplished the goal he set out to achieve.
