Way back in Season 2 of American Idol, Simon Cowell discovered “the worst singer in the world.” His name was Keith Beukelaer, and he auditioned for the show with a questionable Madonna cover.
Judges Simon Cowell and Randy Jackson tried to reason with Keith, who seemed genuinely surprised that they didn’t like his voice. Watch the audition below, and find out what the judges said.
‘American Idol’ Singer Gets Called ‘The Worst’ By Simon
Keith told the judges he was “the next American Idol,” calling himself “very entertaining and unique.” As he performed Madonna’s “Like a Virgin,” the judges struggled to hide their laughter.
Simon stopped Keith in the middle and asked him to sing something else. So he launched into Whitney Houston’s “I Wanna Dance With Somebody.” Unsurprisingly, it wasn’t any better than the first performance.
“Last year I described somebody as being the worst singer in America,” Simon told Keith. “I think you’re possibly the worst singer in the world, based on that performance. And I’m absolutely serious. I’ve never, ever heard anything like that in my life.”
How Did Keith React To The Judges’ Critique?
Randy Jackson called Keith’s American Idol audition “horrific,” while Simon emphasized that “there is nobody on this planet who sings like you.” Keith admitted he may not be the best singer in the world, but he thinks he’s good.
Randy asked Keith if people tell him he sounds good, and he told them other people auditioning complimented him, and so have his friends. He said his mother hasn’t been very supportive of him, but he hasn’t sung for her much.
Simon told Keith never to pursue a career in music. Randy suggested he should maybe focus on dancing, since he said he enjoys that too. Both judges voted no, and Keith seemed to take it pretty well.
However, once he got outside the audition room and talked to American Idol host Ryan Seacrest, his attitude changed. “Simon is the biggest jerk I have ever met,” he said. “He told me I’m the worst singer in the world, so he can go kiss my ass.”
