Two time Olympian Shevon Nieto is originally from Jamaica but now lives in California. And once she stepped onto the America’s Got Talent stage, her bubbly personality and inspiring story captivated the judges. Watch her tearful audition below where she talks about her journey to the Olympics and how it all came crashing down. You will probably end up crying.
Shevon began running 400-meter hurdles back in high school when she joined the track team and realized she was pretty fast. At that point, she had her sights set on being in the Olympics. In ninth grade, she was ranked number three in New York State in the 400 meters. “Making it to the Olympics was like winning the lottery,” she said.
She competed at the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens and in 2015 in Beijing. In 2016, she retired from the sport when her husband Jamie Nieto got into a jumping accident that left him paralyzed from the chest down. He himself is a two-time Olympic high jumper. This was when her life changed forever. Jamie was coaching Olympic hopeful athletes at the time when his foot slipped on one of his jumps.
At the time, the pair were dating for about three years. You can actually hear the phonecall when the kids called the police after Jamie was injured. Leave it to America’s Got Talent to make us cry. Shevon was getting ready for her third Olympic games when Jamie was injured. “Jamie just kept saying I’m sorry. He felt like he messed up our dream,” she said. Jamie was in tears during his interview and so was Shevon. At that moment she decided to retire. Jamie said that this was a “heartbreaking” moment that he experienced because he did not want Shevon to give up on her dream. Shevon wrote songs for Jamie as a way to help them get through the difficult times after his injury. He encouraged her to try out for America’s Got Talent. “I married the woman that storybooks talk about,” he said, making our hearts melt. “It feels really good to win your races, you know, but it’s the hardest races, those are the best ones. That win is worth everything,” Shevon said.
Shevon performed an original song for the judges called “Through The Good And Bad” that she wrote for Jamie. Guest judge Eric Stonestreet who was filling in for sick Heidi Klum looked like he was about to cry during the performance. There was no audience present for Shevon’s audition since this was filmed at the height of the coronavirus pandemic before ‘AGT’ production was shut down indefinitely. Even though she did not have an audience, she still slayed and got a standing ovation from the judges.
America’s Got Talent production has since started back up again for the Judge Cuts. Will we see Shevon there? More than likely this emotional performance will send her to the next round.
