Katharine McPhee and her husband, record producer David Foster, have been spending quarantine doing at-home concerts for fans on Instagram Live. Sunday was American Idol night.
Katharine recreated an iconic performance from her time on Season 5 of the show, with special guest Simon Cowell making an appearance via Facetime. Check out the incredible performance in the video below.
Katharine McPhee Sings ‘I Have Nothing’ For Simon Cowell
Former American Idol judge Simon Cowell appeared on Katharine’s Instagram Live via FaceTime, with his son Eric also making an appearance. Katharine talked to Simon about a performance she gave of Whitney Houston’s “I Have Nothing,” which was co-written by David Foster.
At the time, Simon criticized Katharine’s performance. He later apologized for his negative critique, but Katharine said she watched the performance back and agreed that she was “godawful.”
So what better time to try again? Katharine even had the yellow dress she wore in the original performance. She hung it around her neck as she once again performed “I Have Nothing,” this time with David on the piano.
“I think that was definitely a lot better than that screeching performance I gave 14 years ago,” Katharine said when she was done singing.
Katharine Tries On Her Yellow ‘American Idol’ Dress
Katharine may not have worn her iconic yellow dress for the Instagram Live, but she did end up trying it on. On Monday, the singer posted a photo of herself wearing the dress, alongside an image from the 2006 performance.
“No the simulation isn’t glitching,” she wrote, “this really is me trying on the dresses I wore for Idol 14 years later.”
She also posted the photo on Instagram, joking that this is what happens on Day 26 in quarantine. Katharine also said she was thinking about wearing the dress on a red carpet “once we are out of this.” We can’t wait to see if she does.
