When Robert Finley auditioned for AGT in 2019, the judges and audience immediately fell in love with his original song. The U.S. Army veteran shared how he lost his sight, and what music meant to him.
Robert was 65 years old when he auditioned for Season 14 of the show. Check out his heartfelt audition below, and read on to find out what the judges had to say about his performance.
Blind Veteran Robert Finley Auditions For ‘AGT’
Robert told the judges that he lost his sight due to glaucoma. He added that music was a passion of his, saying, “I’d say I had to lose my physical sight so I could see my true destiny.”
He went on to perform an original song called “Get It While You Can.” The song included the lyrics, “You gotta take it when you can get it / Get it while you can / Wrap it up in bacon / Sizzle it in your pan.”
Judge Julianne Hough stood up and danced along as Robert sang. She and the other AGT judges gave him a standing ovation. “You might not be able to see us, but I hope you can feel us,” Julianne told him.
How Far Did Robert Finley Make It In The Competition?
Howie Mandel said he could feel Robert’s passion, adding that people should “live life the way you do.” Gabrielle Union told him that he had her at “wrap it up in bacon.” She said he combines blues, soul, country, and rock ‘n’ roll.
Simon Cowell said he liked Robert even before he started singing, and shared that his voice was like “the finest wines,” pointing out that young people don’t sound like that. “This could go through the roof for you,” Simon said.
Robert made it to the semifinals of Season 14. He’s been performing for many years, traveling through Europe as part of the Army band. He later worked as a carpenter for many years until he lost his sight. In 2016, he released his debut studio album Age Don’t Mean a Thing.
In 2017, Robert released his second album, Goin’ Platinum! It features original songs he performed on AGT, including “Get It While You Can” and “Medicine Woman.” You can follow him on Facebook for updates.
