American Idol is down to its Top 5, and contestants have come a long way since their first auditions. To mark this milestone, the show’s YouTube page shared a few reaction videos from artists like Alejandro Aranda, Madison VanDenburg, and more.

The singers had a giggle over watching their past selves and even shared some behind-the-scenes secrets. Maybe one day, when they’re rich and famous, they’ll make reaction videos to their reaction videos. Until then, check out what they had to say in the videos below.

Alejandro Aranda

Alejandro revealed that he was “extremely tired” during his audition. He noticed himself spacing out. “All I was thinking about was thinking about is how bad I smelled,” he shared, adding that he was nervous to have Lionel Richie hug him for this reason. He says he was told to only play for a minute, but he ended up playing the whole song because the judges never stopped him. He also called out American Idol for only having a digital piano available. Juicy!

Madison VanDenburg

“My hair is so greasy!” Madison declared at the start of her audition video. She added that she kept her eyes closed during the song because she thought she had messed up the beginning. She said there was a high note in the song that she would crack on during practice, but she didn’t crack during the audition. Madison also pointed out when she wiped a “sweatstache” off her upper lip. It’s not all glitz and glamour, people.

Wade Cota

Wade remarked that he liked the haircut he had during his audition, and added that he has lost 60 pounds since then. “Those are very nice,” he said about judge Luke Bryan’s teeth. He even complimented the show’s camerawork during his performance. When his past self mentioned having a dog, Wade declared, “I miss my dog so much!” He said getting the golden ticket was “the moment that changed my whole life.”

Laci Kaye Booth

Laci seemed embarrassed about her spray tan, but commented that the judges’ reactions to her audition were “so sweet.” She says her audition was a “blur,” and she can’t remember any of it now. “I thought they hated me after I finished,” she said, adding that Katy Perry seemed to take forever to call her a “diamond in the rough.”

Laine Hardy

Laine’s audition process was a little different, since he accompanied his friend Ashton to her audition. He said he had to think fast to come up with something to sing when they asked him. “I didn’t want to do Hollywood Week twice in a row,” he said of the moment they offered him a golden ticket. (However, he added that this season wasn’t as bad as last season.) “It just happened,” he said. And look how far he’s come.

The contestants will sing for a chance to make it to the finale this Sunday when American Idol airs live coast-to-coast at 8 p.m. ET / 5 p.m. PT on ABC.
